Lisa Jack a student of photography at Occidental College, sought a striking subject for a portrait project and was tipped off about a charismatic freshman named “Barry” Obama who would make an ideal subject. After the shoot, these images would remain locked away for the next 28 years, until a dare from a friend triggered Lisa Jack to seek them out.

A video put together by Chris Ware for our spring 2009 event "This American Life -- Live!" -- in which Ira Glass hosts an actual episode of the radio program, performed onstage by some of our favorite contributors. Dan Savage, Starlee Kine, and Mike Birbiglia told stories; David Rakoff and Dave Hill conducted a ‘special investigation. Plus, additional visuals by Arthur Jones, and a very special appearance by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth

In an exhibit that the New York Times labeled "must be seen to be believed," dancer and visual artist Nick Cave (not to be confused with the musician of the same name) debuts his hand-sewn collection of Soundsuits. The outfits are wearable art that draws on elements as diverse as African ceremonial garb and runway haute couture, and their aesthetics alone are worth a gander; but it's once the suits start to move that the real magic happens. Cave's design expertise, combined with his penchant for found materials, results in suits that, when worn, produce sounds both ethereal and spooky. Visit on a day that features free Soundsuit demonstrations, and you will literally see (and hear) art in motion.

Art Inside/Outside: Artist Environments

From Kurt Schwitter's Merzbau to Donald Judd's Marfa, Texas ranch, artists have long made their homes extensions of their studios, and vice versa. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its reputation as a refuge for creative outsiders, California is home to some of the most spectacular contemporary examples of buildings that are themselves mediums for artistic expression. Inside/Outside offers a tour of some of the Golden State's most fascinating artistic environs, from Sam Rodia's monumental Watts Towers in LA to a full-scale recreation of skate and surf artist Mike Shine's Bolinas shack, putting a whole new gloss on "home decor."

Paul McCarthy: Low Life Slow Life: Part 2

Paul McCarthy's career can be described as a movement from liquids to solids. The artist's early performance-based work — which found him smearing all manner of foodstuffs and paint over his naked body — has since given way to large-scale installations and sculptures that are no less disturbing in their uncanny blend of kitsch and abjection. Low Life Slow Life: Part 2 continues in the same vein as McCarthy's earlier exhibit at CCA's Wattis Institute: a catalog of some of the artist's "favorite things" (made by the likes of Walt Disney, Dennis Oppenheim, Lil Picard, and others) that have impacted his work since the 1970s.

Music: Classical Hauschka w/ Magik*Magik Orchestra

Like John Cage and his treated pianos Dusseldorf-based pianist Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) likes to play dress up with his instrument. The rule-breaking minimalist clamps wedges of leather, felt, and rubber between the strings; prepares the hammers with aluminum paper; weaves guitar strings around the piano's guts; and holds everything down with gaffer's tape. His arrangements sound orchestral, with singing strings and delicate layering, but he takes as much from electronica as from the classical canon.
